Biography
My name is Whitney Lackenbauer, and I am
a assistant professor of Canadian history at St. Jerome’s
University at the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario.
I first became interested in the Rangers as an undergraduate
co-op student working for the Director General Aboriginal
Affairs at National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa, when some
Rangers set up a display as part of the 1996 Aboriginal Awareness
Week activities. In 2000, I took a graduate reading course
on Arctic security issues and decided to write my research
paper on the history of the Rangers. Since that time, I have
been gathering documents and personal perspectives on this
unorthodox military formation.
On a more personal note, I live on a farm
in southwestern Ontario with my wife Jennifer and son Harrison.
Although there is no Otterville Ranger patrol, “the
eyes and ears of the Canadian Forces” are often discussed
in our household.
