Textbooks

There is no formal textbook for History 103.

This course website contains links to some required readings for this course.

Two of the most useful links for students may be:

The Dictionary of Canadian Biography [DCB], published jointly by University of Toronto and Laval University Press,

The Canadian Encyclopedia [TCE] is also available online free of charge. This is a useful place if you need general background information on events or themes that we cover in class (translation: it is useful for midterm and final exam preparation), but it is not a strong source for university-level research papers.

An optional textbook for this course is Michael Bliss, Right Honourable Men: The Descent of Canadian Politics from Macdonald to Chretien, available at the University of Waterloo bookstore. It is no longer in print, and therefore you will have to purchase a copy through a used bookstore if you are interested in reading it. The latest edition is published by HarperCollins (2004), but the earlier edition (1994) will be equally useful for students taking this course because we will not be studying the most recent prime ministers this term.
